AbstractAlthough legal age of casino gambling has been raised to 21 years, many other online and offline games forms are available to young people in Macao. Given the scarcity of relevant research, this study, based on the theory of planned behavior, aims to identify psychological risk/protective factors of gambling disorder among Chinese youth. We recruited 1235 14- to 24-year-old Chinese students, who voluntarily participated in this anonymous survey. Respectively 40% and 51% of the high school and undergraduate respondents had gambling experience. Furthermore, over 4% of them reported more than five symptoms of gambling disorder and were classified as disordered gamblers. The results of structural equation modeling suggested that the measurement tools shared similar properties in the high school and university samples; negative gambling attitudes and injunctive norms were significant correlates among only high school respondents, whereas gambling refusal self-efficacy toward tempting situations/thoughts was a consistent protective factor against gambling disorder in both samples. The findings provide practical insights on future prevention programs against youth gambling in Chinese communities.
