Abstract | In some hot industrial zones, such as Macau and Hong Kong, are crowd cities with limited space for the industry. Effective training the usage of various facilities and design the facility layout become a crucial for the success for an industry company. Virtual prototype of facilities and their layout could benefit the potential users and experts to interactively evaluate its goodness prior to a real deployment. There is some evidence that the use of virtual reality may provide some benefits in improving safety and reducing risk in the physical work environment. In this work, a virtual CNC machining workplace environment is developed using VRML, JAVA, and Database techniques. Accessing through the web, a user of this environment who has no experience on machining could learn the CNC operation method by interactively driving the virtual lathe machine. In addition, the virtual environment allows simulation of hazardous scenarios. The user could visualize the machining conditions and get impression of the importance of safety by closing the door during machining. The method described in this paper appears to be valid for conducting internet based virtual training on new machining technology and transferring the experience gained from virtual to real environment to improve the training efficiency and reduce risks. It is well known that industrial sound, lighting, and object distance can influence perception of risk in industrial training. In this work, a web-based facility layout environment is developed, which enables layout the facilities as well as set the variations in lighting, sound, and distance from machines. Such an environment may be perceived differently in different lighting and sound conditions, as it is in a real environment. Human perception on different combination of the variations can be used to help industry to evaluate the layout performance and reduce hazards in the workplace. |
