Abstract

STEM education is an integrated approach to learning that weaves together the four disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to bring together authentic and relevant learning experiences for students. Much has been discussed about the importance and benefits of STEM education, but there is a lack of documentation on how to effectively implement STEM learning in primary level classrooms. Using a lesson plan entitled 'Jack won't die if he knows science', the current study reports on how the 5E pedagogical approach can be systematically introduced in primary school classrooms through (a) engagement, (b) exploration, (c) explanation, (d) elaboration, and (e) evaluation. An example is designed to meet local science, mathematics, and technology learning standards in Macau. It engages the scientific concepts of buoyancy, density, ratios, and measurement. In addition to the pedagogical approaches, formative assessments of intended learning outcomes are included.
