Abstract | Background: Athletes can have mental health issues like everyone else. Sports-related and non-sports-related mental health concerns occur at similar rates. Several systematic reviews have shown that mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) can promote mental health and enhance performance among athletes. Objectives: This review aims to offer a comprehensive overview and synthesize shreds of evidence from systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the various MBIs in enhancing athletes' mental health and athletic performance, identifying strategies for future research. Methods: A systematic search was conducted using Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. The PICOS framework is applied to determine the reviews are qualified for inclusion, and the search procedure adheres to the PRISMA statement. (Prospero registration number: CRD42023411328) Results: A total of 13 SRMAs were included in this review (10 focused on mental health, 3 focused on mental health). There are few SRMAs mentioning athletes' mental health. There is evidence for a positive and significant effect of mindful training on decreased burnout syndrome, competition anxiety, and mental-related elements such as flow and self-compassion. The effect of MBIs on athletes' well-being appears limited. Mindfulness Acceptance Commitment (MAC) is a popular training method that significantly impacts sport performance. Conclusions: This review reveals that MBIs is favorable to affect mental-health factors, such as level of mindfulness, competition anxiety, burnout and improve performance in sports context. However, further research is needed more high-quality research to provide a stronger evidence base for the implication of MBIs. |
