Abstract | Rapid Prototyping (RP) is the collective name of a set of different technologies used to manufacture parts by constructively building them by layers. The Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) is a rapid prototyping process where the part is built from sheet of raw material. This paper proposes a new offset method for optimizing the total volume of waste material to be crosshatched in LOM. The cont each layer is composed of straight lines if the input file is in STL (stereolithographic) format. The authors suggest to make a larger closed contour by offsetting the straight lines away from all boundaries at each layer. The total manufactming time can be shortened by adopting this method. Products produced by this method could be protected from damage when removing waster material outside of the convex hu |
