AbstractThe development of complex engineering product and project plan require the efforts and collaboration of hundreds of participants from diverse backgrounds resulting in complex relationship among both people and tasks. While the traditional project management tools allow the modeling of sequential and parallel processes, they fail to address process iterations and tasks interdependency, nor to decompose and integrate tasks. To address this issue, the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) method, a matrix based system analysis and task management tool, is introduced. In this paper, an efficient partitioning algorithm of design structure matrix is proposed. The algorithm is composed of four sub-models: input model, cycle model, group model and order model. The algorithm analyzes dependency relationships among tasks by tracing their input tasks chain. Cycle matrix is created to partition the tasks set into individual groups that with different interdependency levels. The execution sequence of tasks could be ordered according to the group cycle values. Case studies are conducted on several industrial projects to verify the efficiency of proposed algorithm. It is concluded that the new algorithm is an efficient and robust method for analyzing the development process to improve the concurrence and collaboration of project tasks. The method could be applied in a variety of contexts, including project planning and management, product development, system engineering, and organization design.
