The notion of ‘a room of her own’ brought forth by Virginia Woolf has been a core belief among many women practitioners in the arts. Usurping drawing, appropriating some gender-stereotyped Chinese characters, and taking nüshu, the dying secret women’s script practiced by some women in China, I demonstrated my creative works through setting up the artwork (as) in A Room. My practice is strategic: drawing, an art activity considered sidelined or secondary as compared to painting in the Fine Arts tradition in the West; Chinese characters having the ideograph ‘female’ encode meanings that are feminine and gender-stereotyped; nüshu, a set of inventive and unique writing script practiced by some women as opposed to the official and legitimate language; all regarded as ‘marginal’, I have subversively worked to explore how the ‘fringe’ can speak. While a room is an orientation, it is but a transition; the receptions aim to draw a new experience through which art languages could be experimented differently.
