There is a conviction that the world’s earlier archives or libraries were the memories of women (Trinh 1987). However, women, especially ordinary women have rarely been the central figures in history. Traditional sources have often neglected the lives of women. The contemporary approach of history preserving through oral history has helped placing women, among the less privileged and the many unknown majority of people into the making of self and dignity. It thrust life into history and it widens its scope. Equally, oral history offers a challenge to the accepted myths of history, to the authoritarian judgment inherent in its tradition (Thompson 1988). This book comprises of the oral narratives by seven elderly women in Macau, some old Macau photos in their era, and my drawing of some old artefacts in that period. It aims to explore how some traces of a fading generation of elderly women in Macau may nurture the successive generations through some audio-visual forms of representations. It may offer a means of integrating women into historical scholarship and provide a means for a radical transformation of the social meaning of history.
