In the 1920s, Virginia Woolf brought forth the idea ‘A room of one’s own’, which has since been a core belief among many women practitioners. I had two respective exhibitions entitled A room launched in Taipei and Macau in the year 2011. Through setting up the artwork (as) in a room, I demonstrated my drawing manifestations concerning some gender stereotyped Chinese characters and nushu, the women’s script created by and shared among women in a small region in China. The exclusive use of nushu among women for generations well indicates that some illiterate women had been able to create their own means of communication to express their own desires through storytelling, orally in chants, in embroidery work, and in written form. In doing so they transformed their spaces within a culture that allowed them limited access, defining for themselves an identity which was forgotten in History. Appropriating drawing, a sidelined practice in the Western Art and nushu writing, an inventive approach to the legitimate language, my performative practice in A room displays my work in various featured spots, making dialogues with the space and suggesting possible transpositions of boundary. A mode of creative practice, this writing is interwoven with various theorists’ and practitioners’ discourses and practices concerning woman in a room; whilst a room is an orientation, it as well acts as a strategy.
