AbstractI was interested and got involved in narrative research at the time I was studying for my doctoral degree in the UK in the mid-1990s. However, my exposure to stories (interchangeable with narratives in this chapter) can be traced back to my life and family history. I was made in China, born in Macao and raised in Hong Kong. This is how my journey begins. During the 1960s, people in Mainland China suffered a great famine. The only chance to survive was to leave. With the pregnancy due date soon approaching, my mother decided to change our fate and depart with my eldest brother for an unknown destination, Macao, leaving my father and elder sister behind to take care of grandmother. I was born a few days later in this small fishing village, now, the ‘Las Vegas of Asia’. Macao was still undeveloped in 1960s and 1970s. Most people were poor. As children, we did not have any toys. Bedtime stories were the only ‘toys’, ‘games’ and ‘rewards’ from my mother. As far back as I can remember, my mother repeated the same old stories over and over again. Probably, she was running out of tales to relate. However, I never tired of them. She used to start each story with the words ‘once upon a time’ and ended with ‘this story teaches us so and so’. These stories were possibly my very first moral lessons.
