Abstract | High-intensity interval exercise (HIE) is a new developed exercise mode. The purpose of this study was to compare the responses of HIE on post-prandial blood glucose in obese and non-obese individuals. 16 obese (BMI >25 kg/m2) and 16 non-obese (18 kg/m2 < BM I< 23 kg/m2) healthy male youth were invited to conduct four 30s Wingate anaerobic cycling with 4-minute rest and no exercise control after a standardized meal. Blood glucose was examined at fasting and post-prandial 60, 90, 120, 135, 150 min. Results: Significant reductions in blood glucose were found at 120, 135 and 150 min in obese (p < 0.001) and non-obese young men (p < 0.05), and HIE caused more decreases in obese than in non-obese young men at 120 min (-26.6% vs -8.9%), 135 min (-31.8% vs -16.2%), and 150 min (-22.1% vs -11.6%). Moderate correlations were found between BMI and changes of blood glucose at 120 (r=0.41, p<0.05), 135 (r=0.43, p<0.05) and 150 min (r=0.40, p<0.05). Conclusion: High-intensity interval exercise reduces post-prandial blood glucose in both obese and non-obese young healthy men, and the reductions in the former are more than the latter. |
