AbstractIn the present study, the feasibility of laser surface melting (LSM) of a ferritic stainless steel (AISI 430) for minimizing the effect of hydrogen embrittlement and improving pitting corrosion resistance was investigated. LSM of AISI 430 was successfully achieved by a 2.3-kW high power diode laser (HPDL). Hydrogen was introduced into the laser-surface melted 430 by cathodic charging in the 0.1 M NaOH solution under galvanostatic conditions at a current density of 30 mA/cm2 at 25 degC. The degree of embrittlement caused by hydrogen for the charged and non-charged specimens was assessed by slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) test in air at strain rate of 3x10.5 s-1. Potentiodynamic polarization test for the laser-surface melted 430 in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at 25 degC was performed by using a potentiostat. Hydrogen-charged specimen showed a dramatic decrease in ductility, while the laser-surface melted specimen showed a higher tensile strength and improved toughness as compared with the as-received one. The laser-surface melted specimen after hydrogen charging showed similar results as the hydrogen-charged one. Compared with the as-received AISI 430, the pitting corrosion resistance of the laser-surface melted AISI 430 was found to be significantly improved as reflected by the noble shift in pitting potential and reduction in passive current density attributed to a more homogenous compositions.
