AbstractThe “indigenous” variation practice in Chinese curriculums remains largely unknown. One possible reason is that few scholars possess the necessary “lens” in the comparing example to identify useful information about variation practice. The purposes of this paper lie in to call the reader's attention to developing this lens, identifying this practice and its roles in general. This paper reports on the development of an analytical instrument from variation problems [“one problem multiple solution” and “one problem multiple changes”] as used in Chinese textbooks which identifies concept /solution connections in mathematics textbook examples. The aim is to become more articulate about developing coherent curriculum. Some educational implications are suggested.
