Abstract | Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the current situation of physical fitness level and the difference of sports motivation among college students in Macao. In addition, the correlation between these two dependent variables was studied as well. Methodology: A quantitative research method was carried out in this study and 145 college students in Macau were recruited as sampling. Background information (gender, age, grade, and accommodation etc.) and fitness data of different factors (BMI, HR-index, jump, sit-up, hand-grip, push-up, FFM and height) were collected. The motivation information was collected through Sports Motivation Scale (SMS), built by Pelletier, et al (1995) and modified by Yang Cailian(2011), which is appropriate to Macau culture and popular sports. The Cronbach α of subscales intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and amotivation were 0.91, 0.75, and 0.72, respectively. SPSS for Windows 20.0 was used to analyze initial retrieved data. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, Scheffe’s method and one-way repeated measure ANOVA, correlation analysis were conducted to explore the relationships among the variables. Results: For the fitness of Macao college students, there was no significant difference in fitness of different grades and age while jump is significant in dorms. And there were significantly different in different faculty in jump (p=.003), HR-index (p=.029), hand-grip (p=.004), FFM (p=.007), height (p=.003). For the sports motivation of Macao college students, there were no significant difference in age, faculty, gender and grade. However, extrinsic motivation was significant different in dorm (p=.026) and Chao with the highest level. For correlation between sports motivation and fitness, intrinsic motivation was significantly correlated with fitness in weight (p=.025), BMI (p=.028) and FFM (p=.035). Additionally, sports motivation was also correlated with fitness in weight (p=.015), BMI (p=.015) and FFM (p=.037). Conclusion: Firstly, there was no significant difference in fitness of different grades and age while jump is significant in dorms. And jump, HR-index, hand-grip, FFM, height were significantly different in different faculty. Secondly, sports motivation shown no significant different in age, faculty, gender and grade. However, extrinsic motivation was significant difference in dorm. Thirdly, intrinsic motivation and whole sports motivation were significantly correlated with fitness in weight, BMI and FFM. |
