Abstract | Successful education systems should strive to have students performing well in academic studies, and have their schools demonstrating equity in outcomes of schooling (OECD, 2016a). For every cycle of the triennial assessment since inception in 2000, PISA focuses on the fulfilment of two pertinent research goals in its comparative education agenda: (1) Education systems achieve excellence in educational quality; and (2) they demonstrate high level of educational equity concomitantly. Through participation in PISA, governments of participating economies seek to pursue educational quality at a performance level that is sustainable, and at the same time of considerable educational equity. They hope to learn from the high-performing and/or fast-improving education systems. In PISA 2015, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Hong Kong-China and Macao-China are reported to achieve high performance and high equity amongst the 72 participating education systems (OECD, 2016a). |
