The “Sea of Mirrors” iPhone Experimental Film Project (2017-2019).• My roles: I designed the iPhone experiment designs, and was also executive producer and actor (as Donnie, a minor role). • Background: Steven Soderbergh’s iPhone horror flick Unsane (2018) inspired this project. Filmmaker Thomas Lim who had previously directed, scripted and acted in Roulette City (2012) and I were especially intrigued by Soderbergh’s notion of the iPhone as “the future of filmmaking”. As a film studies professor I was naturally excited by the prospect of exploring the device as a filmmaking tool for self-learning as well as for classroom teaching: What were the possibilities, promises and limitations? In particular I was interested in using the different shot sizes that iPhone uniquely permits to experiment with “temporal analepses” in non-linear narrative. - Shot entirely on iPhone, at first in Macao over the summer of 2018, and then in LA later that year when Thomas relocated to California, the experimental film attracted enthusiasts both locally and internationally, with some coming from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States. - In Macao the project had personnel and technical support from the local creative arts community, including postproduction house 1220 which assisted with colour calibration. Musician Alex Oh of Singapore scored the soundtrack. - During production and postproduction, the film project received extensive media coverage in Macao, including TV interviews. - The result was the iPhone thriller Sea of Mirrors 《鏡海》(78 minutes). Thomas Lim (of Islandman Pictures, Singapore) was the director of this largely private-funded and self-sponsored production. There were nearly 100 published items and The Macao Daily Post carried the production dairy. For the list, see end of statement.- Sea of Mirrors premiered on 24 May 2019 at Cinematheque Passion, Macao; with two screenings. The film then played at La Salle College of the Arts, Singapore (26 June 2019) before an audience of international Asian film scholars and students. In October 2019, it was screened at the Asian Film Festival Barcelona.- Synopsis: In glittering Macao, Riri, a former famous Japanese actress, while desperately searching for her kidnapped daughter, falls into a trap of lies and deception. - Official trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg83MkFe0jo- Official website: http://seaofmirrors.islandmanpictures.com/- To watch the creative work: Available upon request.- The iPhone experiment was reviewed by Rowena Santos Aquino for VCinema Podcast and Blog http://www.vcinemashow.com/sea-of-mirrors-macao-japan-2019/- Macao press coverage for the project was particularly extensive.
