From an evolutionary perspective of law, constant small changes tend to accumulate and to manifest themselves within sudden and more fundamental changes, which can be termed “legal paradigm shifts”. Such legal paradigm shifts occur when a legal system has reached a “tipping point” where no single legal norm is left unturned and fundamental premises, principles, concepts or the like will become fundamentally altered. This chapter presumes that such a tipping point in the global legal system may be imminent and that the necessary preparations in law therefore must be taken to mitigate the potentially devastating effects and consequences of such drastic changes. To this end, the present chapter turns to fundamental (or basic) research in science and law to identify the principal changes that must be introduced in law and legal science to help solve many urgent global problems or even secure the survival of humanity and the planet.
