E-Health literacy: A critical role for online media communication in China

AbstractE-health literacy is a crucial measure that provides context for exploring the understanding of and for engaging with target groups’ health status and education. This study tested hypotheses about how systemic and institutional factors influence and inform E-health communication in China for people encountering public health problems that affect citizens of first-world countries. The eHEALS questionnaire was applied from a previous study to measure consumers’ combined knowledge, comfort, and perceived skills of determining, evaluating, and applying E-health information for health problems. Self-administered questionnaires were circulated online from October 2015 to February 2016, resulting in a total of 342 returned valid samples. The results showed that the simplified Chinese version of eHEALS was internally consistent. Additionally, user E-health literacy and computer skills were correlated (r = 0.439, p < .001). This paper presents evidence that E-health communication and health promotion efforts are mediated by computers and other digital technologies.
