AbstractThe acronym BRICS combining Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, can be regarded as a multiple enantiosis, i.e. a rhetorical figure which places together different or contradictory things, which may mutually, set off and enhance each other as well as others in this world. Enantiosis, such as unity in diversity, is, however, a broader paradigm for the many challenges characterising the present era. Related to paradoxes and oxymora, the rhetorical figure of enantiosis has a disturbing impact on common modes of cognition and reasoning, which play a significant role in law. It is therefore in law and cognition that greater unity in diversity will have to be sought. To this end, the BRICS’ diversity can indeed play a constructive role not only in their cooperation but in the process of establishing a future global legal order. But the success of the BRICS, it is argued, lies not in their mutual differences or in those related to other countries, but actually in the differences that they can jointly make in the world community.
