Abstract | At the time of its first publication, the collection of maps presented in this book was the most comprehensive and detailed cartographic depiction of East-Asia that Europe had ever seen. Although it was in part the merit of French cartographer Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697–1782), essentially it constituted the European incorporation of a Chinese atlas that had been produced with the assistance of European missionaries. Therefore, if we wish to explore the provenance of the Nouvel atlas de la Chine, we first need to briefly retrace its roots and understand how this wealth of geographical information reached Europe in the first place. Only then will we be able to fully appreciate the contribution and role of d'Anville and the reception of these maps in both Europe and China. |
