AbstractDuring a recent visit to the National Library of France, a catalogue entry caught my attention because it referred to an 'oriental mix [of documents]' not kept at the Department of Oriental Manuscripts, but rather at the small Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. The library in question, now an integral part of the National Library of France, was founded by Marc Antoine René de Voyer (1722-1787), Marquis de Paulmy, Third Marquis d'Argenson and Grand Master of Artillery, who built a vast and unique personal collection of books and manuscripts at his official residence near the Bastille. Besides the reputation that came with his titles, he was known to be a first-rate bibliophile, someone who spent much of his time and money building a collection of manuscripts and books and who took great pride in personally cataloguing his most valued possessions. Some of the documents discussed in this contribution perhaps belonged to the personal collection of de Voyer, although at least one piece could be traced back to the revolutionary confiscations that constitute another substantial part of the library's holdings. Even so, the exact history behind the acquisition of the documents listed below remains obscure.
