Abstract | Over the past two and a half thousand years, philosophy has emerged in many cultures and has taken on many forms. It is now well known that, during the classical and pre-modern periods, certain philosophical ideas crossed formidable geographical boundaries and spread very widely. Despite the flow of ideas between certain ancient and pre-modern cultures, it is only relatively recently that a global philosophical culture has begun to take shape. In this emergent global philosophical culture, thinkers draw on the intellectual resources to be found in the history of not only one, but many, philosophical traditions from different parts of the world, to address the problems that concern them. The current intellectual context, which owes a huge debt to nineteenth and twentieth-century scholarship in the history of philosophy, Sinology, and Indology, has brought to the fore questions about the degree to which we might be able to bring together insights and conceptual tools from diverse and formerly independent philosophical traditions to form genuinely novel philosophical approaches that add up to more than the sum of their component parts. It also invites us to reassess our expectations about the role of philosophy and philosophers as agents of cultural change. Can cross-traditional philosophical work that is grounded in pre-modern intellectual systems only look back on cultural forms or can it play a transformative role on our current intellectual life? |
