Abstract | Conceptual metaphor theory provides a useful tool with which to think about philosophical traditions, as it can reveal the deep structure of networks of ideas. Conceptual metaphors are not just linguistic devices, rather they organise whole networks of thought, experience and activity. Different philosophical traditions can be understood as having developed and matured around particular conceptual metaphors, each giving rise to a distinctive conception of both the practice and the goal of philosophy. It is suggested that what it means to practise philosophy in any tradition is governed by the dominant conceptual metaphor in use and that considering these metaphors can provide insight into how the goal of philosophy is conceived: as, for example, wisdom in Western traditions and as perfected action in East Asian traditions. |
