Abstract | In this letter, a design concept of controlling equivalent magnetic currents (EMCs) of the linearly-polarized (LP) patch antennas for realizing multifunctional performances is proposed and concluded based on the multi-resonant mode. Firstly, the single EMC could be alternatively used to widen the E-plane half-power beamwidth (HPBW) of the low-profile antenna (Antenna 1). Secondly, by using two parallel EMCs with same phase difference, the broadside radiation pattern could be generated (Antenna 2). Most importantly, its radiation gain could be significantly increased up by setting its spacing $L$ between two EMCs around 0.6λ0 (λ0is the free-space wavelength). Thirdly, by using two parallel EMCs with 180° phase difference, the dual-beam pattern instead of a single-beam pattern could be formed up (Antenna 3). Additionally, in order to widen their impedance bandwidth, several resonant modes of the antennas with similar radiation performances are employed and reallocated closely to each other. In final, all these three types of LP antennas are fabricated and measured. The results have demonstrated that the multifunctional radiation performances are successfully acquired for the LP antennas in a low-profile condition, while keeping several attractive advantages, i.e., wide-bandwidth and stable radiation pattern. |
