Abstract

Adpoting the indirect research methodology of matched guise technique, this paper compares university students language attitudes towards cantonese and English in Macau, according to two factors of status and solidarity, based on a sample of 72 undergraduate students of University of Macau. The resut shows that the Medium of Instruction (MoI) in middle schools does not have an impact on university students language attitude in terms of language status, but using a foreign language as the MoI in middle schools will dwarf the solidarity of the students’ mother tongue. This result might shed some light on the language policy making as far as the choice of the MoI in middle schools in Macau is concerned.
