AbstractA 5.0-to-6.36GHz wideband-harmonic-shaping VCO features a transformer-based multi-LC tank and a tiny-coil head resonator to create a high-and-wideband common-mode resonance at the 2nd harmonic, and a low-and-wideband differential-mode resonance at the 3rd harmonic. They together optimally shape the ISF noise transfer from both the magnitude and phase perspectives, avoiding manual harmonic tuning. The VCO shows a peak FOM of 196.9dBc/Hz at 10MHz offset and a 90-to-180kHz 1/f3 phase noise corner.
