Saponins from Panax species: Chemistry, isolation and analysis

Abstract

Saponins are very important natural products that show a wide range of pharmacological activities. Ginseng saponins isolated from Panax species have attracted worldwide interests owing to their bioactive effects on the immune system, central nervous system, cardiovascular system, cancer and diabetes. These triterpene saponins have been generally considered to be the main bioactive components in Panax plants. In this review, the chemistry, isolation and analysis of saponins from Panax plants, mainly P. ginseng C.A. Mey., P. quinquefolius L., P. notoginseng (Burk) F.H. Chen were reviewed.
