AbstractAtherosclerosis, a progressive disease characterized by the accumulation of lipids and fibrous elements in the large arteries, underlies the vast majority of cardiovascular disease and causes more death and disability worldwide than any other disease. The growing reports show that Radix puerariae(Gegeng), one of the most famous Chinese medicines, can inhibit the progression of atherosclerotic lesions. Isoflavonoids, such as puerarin, daidzein and daidzin, were considered as the main active components in Radix puerariae. In the present paper, the atheroprotective effects of Radix puerariae and its components have been reviewed and discussed.
