Abstract

Many methods have been proposed to predict ground deformation caused by shield tunneling, but few of them provide real-time prediction because the required input parameters are difficult to determine. In this paper, a new time-dependent model of ground movement with three accessible parameters is proposed. Those construction parameters are muck discharge rate, grouting rate, and grout loss factor. The volume losses due to different construction parameters are first estimated. Then the ground deformation induced by the volume losses is calculated. The calculated result shows a good agreement with the measurement. It appears that the ground deformation is significantly sensitive to the muck discharge rate and less sensitive to the grouting rate and grout loss factor. An equilibrium relationship was found between the grouting rate and the grout loss factor, which could minimize the ground deformation at the shield tail.
