Abstract

One of the challenges for STEM Education is to attract younger generations concerning scientific related jobs. In this paper, we propose a simple gamification approach to be used by lower secondary education, or level 2, to an existing experimental kit for 'Reflected Optical Diffraction from One-dimensional Structures'. The kit was designed for upper secondary school, or level 3, and freshman students to broaden their understanding on the science of diffraction of one-dimensional structures and to link with related life examples. The proposed approach makes use of the mechanics of games in Education to make the experiments more engaging. The approach suggests games that can substitute or even be used together with the original set or experiments of the experimental kit. Moreover, we explore the use of students' visual senses for learning. Effective STEM education courses must make use of active learning methodologies such as gamification, as well as exploring all students' senses, as carriers to promote the interest of students for Sciences.
