Abstract | This paper presents an experimental investigation on the water-swelling characteristics of two polymers used for shield tunnel sealing gaskets: water-swelling polyurethane (WSP) and a mixture (WSRP) of WSP and water-swelling rubber (WSR). Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and water-swelling tests were conducted to investigate the microstructural changes and properties of both WSP and WSRP during water-swelling. The test results revealed that WSP improves not only the compatibility of natural rubber with sodium polyacrylate but also the thermal stability of WSRP. The maximum swelling ratio of both WSP and WSRP occurs when the pH value of soaking water is equal to 7. Moreover, the swelling ratio of both WSP and WSRP decreases with an increase in solution concentration and an increase in loading pressure. The experimental study indicated that, compared with WSP, WSRP balances the swelling capacity and has more stable performance under high seawater concentrations and loading pressure. |
