Cavitation erosion resistance of stainless steel laser-clad with WC-reinforced MMC

Abstract

Surface metal matrix composites (MMCs) were laser-fabricated on stainless steel S31603 using Co-WC and Ni-WC powders. The cavitation erosion resistance was significantly increased, by up to a factor of 45. The results are explained in terms of the stacking-fault energy, martensitic transformability and hardness of the matrix, and the role of the ceramic particles. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
