Abstract | For translator training, different models could be used as points of departure. In our practice in translation teaching in the past years, a model of multimodality was used and proved to be relatively effective. Multimodality in this research means a combination of theory and practice, a combination of written and audiovisual teaching materials, a combination of classroom and online study platform as well as a combination of the teacher’s guidance and students’ participation. This paper focuses on one of the translation courses offered to translation students at the University of Macau. Reiss’s text typology and the Skopos Theory are used as the theoretical basis for the students’ practice inside and outside the classroom. The paper discusses the role of norms and conventions in functional translation as well as other related factors that may determine the translator’s decision-making. It also discusses the feasibility and implications of the multimodality model for translation teaching in wider scope. |
