Present-day Yunnan is a frontier and multi-ethnic province in southwest China. While both central and local governments have made concerted efforts to promote its ethnic diversity and ha rmon, so as to demonstrate China's multi-ethnicity, Yunnan has recently been regarded by an increasing number of scholars as a historical part of Southeast Asia.
