Abstract | This is a volume of cultural narratives pertaining to Republican cities. In the form of nine case studies we offer an alternative vision of Chinese cities in the early decades of the past century. Organized under the general framework of urban space these cases examine three critical dimensions of the great urban transformation in Republican China— social, legal and governance orders. Together these narratives suggest a new perception of this historical phenomenon. |
