Abstract | With the mounting labor shortage of the growing gaming industry and its related sectors in Macao, more students are joining the labor market during the school term. What would be the psychological cost of such prevailing students' part-time employment? Numerous studies have been done on demonstrating the importance of the perceived sense of school belongings and its various academic correlates, yet its relationship with student part-time employment was rarely studied. In light of this, the current study aimed at exploring the negative effect of students' part-time employment in the perceived sense of school belonging. A total of 164 undergraduate students (124 females and 40 males) working part-time were recruited in Macao, over 32% of them worked more than 19 hours per week. Findings of hierarchical regression analyses showed that students' part-time job involvement was a significant negative factor of sense of school belonging, after controlling for demographics and other individuals' characteristics including peer relationship, depression and GPA. The implications of the findings and the remedy measures to foster perceived belongings at school were also discussed. |
