Abstract | Heavy metals pollution in urban soils and its effect on urban ecological environment and human health are of increasing concern. In this study, a leaching experiment with repacked soil column was conducted for the heavy metals Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn to assess the effect of simulated acid rain (pH 4.0) on migration and the transformation of their speciation in 9 natural urban soils of Guangzhou. The results showed that the maximum leachate concentrations of Cuand Zn were less than those specified in the Chinese Quality Standards for Groundwater (Grade III), albeit being seriously contaminated with Zn (upto 19,570 mg/kg) and Pb (upto 3,805 mg/kg), thereby suggesting that Cu and Zn that leached from the urban soils receiving acid rain may not pose as risks to water quality.Conversely, the maximum leachateconcentrations of Pb and Cd exceeded Grade III and V of the standards, respectively. The soils were characterized by their pH, soil texture, organic matter, total phosphorus, heavy metal concentrations, as well as their speciation. Principal component analysis and a two-dimensional hierarchical cluster analysis heat map were applied to evaluate the relationship among these parameters. The concentrations of the residual Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd in soils showed little change, whereas marked change occurred to the acid extractable Zn, Cu and Pb and the organic Cd. |
