AbstractThis paper examines the pan-Blue and the pan-Green media oganizations from Taiwan, as well as some from mainland China. A number of U.S. news organizations are also included in our analysis as a reference point. The paper focuses on the editorials and commentaries regarding the 2008 legislative elections in Taiwan. The findings indicate that the U.S. news organizations tend to be more professional, followed by the pan-Blue's Lianhe Bao, China's People's Daily Network, and the Ziyou Shibao group. Although the latter three can be professional, they are more likely to be organic, and their critical role is also quite weak. The study has used the positivist, interpretive and critical approaches to social sciences when studying these media organizations. And it has important implications for further research on professionalism as well as the role of journalists.
