Abstract | Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact of sense of community on Macau residents’ choice of urban renewal mode. Design/methodology/approach - Based on a household survey funded by Macau SAR Government, this paper adopts factor analysis and corrected item-total correlation to examine the factor structure and reliability of sense of community scale, as well as, it uses bivariate analysis and multinominal logistic regression mode to examine the impacts of various factors, including sense of community, on the choice of urban renewal mode (redevelopment, rehabilitation, conservation, street beautification, and maintenance of the status quo as reference). Findings - According to the results of exploratory factor analysis, sense of community could be divided into two dimensions - sense of identity and the idea of mutual support. According to the results of multinomial logistic regression analysis (maintenance of the status quo as reference), age, the length of stay, environmental factors (worse situation) and sense of community (sense of identity) are significant factors of Macau residents’ choice of the urban renewal modes. Environmental factors (worse situation), sense of community (sense of identity) and younger could enhance the likelihood for Macau residents to select urban renewal. On the other hand, the length of stay (<15 years) had various impacts on the choices (higher likelihood to select rehabilitation mode but lower likelihood to select the other three renewal mode). Originality/value - As sense of community is one of popular concepts in environmental management but there is a few of studies on the relationship between sense of community and environmental management. Therefore, the finding of this paper can fill the research gap. The results can inspire the Government to use community partnership and local social organization to facilitate urban renewal. |
