Abstract

Precise laboratory facility is installed with the aim of applying the Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) flow visualization technique in studies of the fundamental behaviors of gravity currents. A sufficient wide, deep and long tank with transparent sidewalls and bottom is constructed so that laser light sheet can be applied and observation can be performed from below and from the side of the tank to reveal details flow structures in and behind the head of gravity currents. The lock-exchange scheme is used for generation of gravity currents and a carefully designed pneumatic controlled partition gate and its positioning system are installed. A high quality laser-induced fluorescence observation and analysis system is established for both qualitative and quantitative studies. The present paper presents the keys factors of the facility design and construction in details.
