Abstract

A total of 4 coped beam tests were conducted to examine the effect of loading eccentricity on the block shear strength and behaviour of coped beams. The eccentricity was due to the use of one-sided connection, such as a tee-section, to connect the beams to the supporting member. The test results showed that the block shear strength of the connection with a tee-section was not affected by the small loading eccentricity produced by the connection. The general failure mode of the specimens was tension fracture of the web at the last row of bolt and shear yielding of the web near the last bolt line. For the specimens with the loading eccentricity, significant twisting of the web was observed. In general, the current block shear design equations provided conservative estimates of the block shear strength of the specimens.
