Abstract

Excessive vibration can cause serious failure problems to wind turbine blade. In order to alleviate this concern, this paper applies constrained layer damping (CLD) for the first time on wind turbine blade which is under aerodynamic loads. The geometry of wind turbine blade with selected airfoil is firstly generated, and then dynamics of the rotating wind turbine blade with stiffening effect and the coupled aerodynamic loads on the blade are modeled by using finite element method. The coupled finite element model is validated by being compared with published literatures. Then, this validated coupled finite element model is employed to check the impact of several critical parameters such as wind and rotation speed on the blade dynamics characteristics. Numerical examples show that rotation and wind speeds can increase the stiffness of the blade. Also, from numerical examples it can be seen that compared with traditional wind turbine blade without CLD the three-layer CLD patch which is applied at the tip of the blade can effectively bring damping into the rotating structure and thus vibration can be reduced. © 2012 American Scientific Publishers.
