Abstract

The use of the traditional PAF (prevention, appraisal and failure cost) model of quality costing as a tool to measure quality improvement has received much attention in the manufacturing industry. Its application in the construction industry has been found to be quite difficult and impractical due to the uniqueness of construction projects. Tremendous resource, particularly staff on site, must be required in order to successfully implement the PAF model. A Construction Process Cost Model (CPCM), based on Part 1 of the British Standard BS 6143 - Process cost model, was proposed by the authors in previous literatures. CPCM is the name given for the PCM when it is applied to construction processes. Since CPCM's focus is on process improvement, users of the model can select particular process(es) for monitoring and therefore resource can be more effectively utilized. As a further work of the previous study, this current paper describes a case study on using CPCM to capture quality costs of a non-construction/non-technological process, namely, the planning process of a construction project in Hong Kong. This case study reveals that CPCM is both versatile and practical. CPCM can also be used as a tool to monitor "process continual improvement", a requirement stipulated in the latest (year 2000) version of the ISO 9000 quality management system. © 2006 by School of Engineering and Technology, Asian Institute of Technology.
