AbstractThis paper presents a method for representing realistic short fur in real-time. In the method, the furry surface is represented with multi-layer, semi-transparent textured slices. We adopt a non-uniform layers scheme to arrange the slice layers over the model surface. In the scheme, the number of slice layers on each part of model surface is adaptively adjusted according to the observation situations and fur states. The scheme can achieve better adaptability and higher rendering efficiency than the usual scheme by uniform layers, and at the same time, the rendering quality is not jeopardized. Experimental results show that our method can render the realistic fur in real-time, and can represent various states of fur effectively such as slanting fur and local long fur.
