AbstractThis paper presents an efficient method for the multiresolution representation of deforming surfaces based on shape feature and deformation area preservation. It adopts a shape feature based quadric error metric to compute the edge collapsing cost, which can efficiently preserve the features on the surface. Besides an additional deformation degree weight is introduced when calculating the aggregated quadric errors, thus features in areas with large deformation can be preserved. Finally, for each frame the edge contraction order is slightly adjusted to further reduce the geometric distortion. The results show that our approach is efficient, easy to implement, and good quality dynamic approximations with well-preserved fine details can be generated at any given frame.
