AbstractVariance shadow maps algorithm reduces aliasing by pre-filtering the depth texture from which an occlusion probability up-bound is computed. But for scenes with high depth complexity this method is unable to correctly describe the visibilities and can bring on light area in shadow regions which is called light bleeding. This paper presents a method to reduce the light bleeding problem by computing two occlusion probability up-bounds. One is the origin variance shadow maps bound and the other bound is got by the wrapped depth value which is mapped by a non-linear high order power function. During rendering, we take the minimum of the two bounds. Results show that this method can reduce both light bleeding which is introduced by variance shadow map and the shadow edge discontinuity problem which is caused by the wrapped method. © 2008 Binary Information Press December 2008.
