Abstract | With China’s rapid rise to global prominence, one of the most pressing challenges in the world is the China challenge, which is no longer merely local or regional but global in reach and scope. While this is no doubt an important dimension of the China challenge as a global challenge, another dimension has received far less attention, that is, the China challenge as a global challenge also means that the so-called “China” challenge is to a large extent global in nature and origin. In other words, it reflects the increasingly transnational and global sources, processes and practices that have made the “China” challenge possible in the first place. Indeed, it reveals the holographic nature of China itself, whose rise needs to be understood as a process of holographic transition in which its transformation and the challenge brought about by the transformation cannot be adequately grasped without the context of its global entanglements. What this also means is that dealing effectively with the “China” challenge requires, above all, a better understanding of the global and holographic nature of contemporary China. |
