Abstract

This chapter first traces the development of corpus-assisted research into translator style over the past two decades. The chapter then discusses the nature of translator style research by examining such important issues in analysis as corpus design (e.g., comparable corpus design, parallel corpus design), research orientation (e.g., TT-oriented, ST-oriented), and sense-making processes, as well as the limitations of this kind of research. Finally, the chapter envisions the future of translator style research by highlighting the forensic and functional aspects of translator style. The forensic aspect of translator style relates to translators’ linguistic idiosyncrasies in constructing forensic linguistic features of target texts, while the functional aspect pertains to translators’ linguistic idiosyncrasies in reproducing functional features of the source text in target texts.
