Abstract | The objective of this presentation is to discuss relevant translation issues that needed to be considered in my translation of Franz Kafka's “Die Verwandlung”, from German to Portuguese. A literary translation, no matter how authorial it may be, and no matter how much visibility the translator proposes in his/her commissioned task, receives interference from several other agents involved in the production of the book. One of the complicating factors in the final negotiation between the translator and the other “agents” is the existence of a previous translation of the same work, in that literary system, consensually considered as a “consecrated” translation. In the case of Brazil, the translation of “Die Verwandlung” by Modesto Carone achieved the status of an established translation. Negotiating changes and proposing reconceptualizations of nuclear terms in translation, as is the case of the “monstrous insect” in Carone's translation, which defines the new existential condition of the protagonist Gregor Samsa, may encounter strong resistance from the agents involved in editing and publishing the work, when the editorial proposal is clearly commercial. In this case, the re-reading of a classic from new perspectives, resulting from academic research, such as the one I proposed in my translation, can be seen by agents as synonymous with marketing risks. |
