Abstract | Online digital platforms are increasingly relying on autonomous algorithms to perform platform governance. We study a growing application of algorithms in platform governance: namely, autonomous algorithmic content moderation. Platforms thriving on user-generated content (UGC) commonly deploy sophisticated algorithms to screen content uploaded by users for the purpose of filtering low-quality or even harmful content (e.g., pornography, hate speech). By exploiting a natural experiment occurred in an online question-and-answer (Q&A) community, we find that the introduction of an autonomous algorithmic content moderation system significantly decreased answer volume, while simultaneously increased the average quality (measure by average vote-ups), cognitive language usage and text readability of the contributed answers. Our findings demonstrate that the implementation of algorithmic moderation system for platform governance can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the deterrence power of the algorithmic moderation system inhibited users’ incentives to generate content. On the other hand, users appeared to contribute answers with higher quality. Our findings provide important implications for platform owners who use, or consider using, autonomous algorithms in platform governance. |
